About the project We’re a UK-based debt collection agency looking to refresh and modernise our customer communications — specifically the letters and emails we send to customers. We’re very aware that debt collection as an industry is often viewed negatively. Our aim is to change that experience as much as possible through the way we communicate: clearer language, more human tone, less intimidation, and more reassurance. This project is about building trust, encouraging engagement, and reducing fear, while remaining fully compliant with regulatory requirements. What we’re looking for We’re looking for an experienced freelance copywriter who can help us rethink and rewrite our existing customer-facing communications with a fresh perspective. You don’t need prior debt collection experience, but you do need to be comfortable working with sensitive subject matter and balancing empathy with clarity and authority. Experience in any of the following would be particularly relevant: Financial services, utilities, telecoms, or regulated industries Customer communications (letters, emails, service messages) Tone of voice development Behavioural or UX-led copywriting Scope of work (initial phase) The initial phase of work will focus on reviewing and refining our existing templates, including: Customer letters Customer emails Key objectives: Make communications feel more human, respectful, and approachable Clearly explain who we are and why we’re getting in touch Reduce anxiety and remove unnecessarily intimidating language Encourage customers to engage with us rather than avoid contact Maintain compliance with relevant regulations and industry standards This is a collaborative piece of work — we’re open to challenge, suggestions, and new ways of framing messages. Tone & approach We want to move away from: Overly formal or legalistic language Cold or threatening phrasing “Us vs them” messaging And towards: Clear, plain English Calm, respectful, non-judgemental tone Language that reassures customers they can safely engage with us How we’d like to work We’re keen to start with: An initial conversation to talk through the brief, your approach, and experience A defined first phase (review + rewrite of a set number of templates) From there, this could evolve into ongoing work as we continue to improve and expand our communications.
