I am modeling multicomponent evaporation in OpenFOAM 10 using compressibleInterFoam within a VOF framework. The liquid phase is an incompressible multicomponent mixture, and the gas phase is a compressible mixture of inert and non-inert species. Each component evaporates independently following the Hertz–Knudsen equation, where the mass flux is driven by the difference between Raoult’s-law-based equilibrium pressure and a user-defined saturation pressure. Evaporation induces latent heat removal at the interface, which is included in the energy equation and results in interfacial cooling. The study is conducted in a simple 2D closed domain (walls on all four sides), initially half-filled with liquid (test case: 0.7 H₂O and 0.3 O₂). The initial vapor pressure is below saturation, and evaporation continues until thermodynamic equilibrium is reached and the system pressure approaches saturation. I have a model but I have some coupling issues between volume fraction equation and species equation.

Dear Client, I understand you are modeling multicomponent evaporation in OpenFOAM 10 using compressibleInterFoam within a VOF framework, with an incompressible liquid mixture and a compressible gas. The key goal is to couple the volume fraction and species equations so that interfacial cooling from latent heat is captured and the system progresses toward equilibrium under Raoult’s-law driven evaporation and user-defined saturation pressure. I will provide a clean, robust coupling strategy that preserves mass and energy balances, implements per-species Hertz-Knudsen fluxes, and ensures stable energy coupling at the interface. I’ll verify boundary and initial conditions, test in 2D, and deliver a ready-to-run setup with diagnostics to track pressure, interfacial temperature, species mass fractions, and fluxes until equilibrium. What is your preferred approach to synchronize the volume fraction equation with species transport for stability, and do you want a modular setup to swap thermodynamic models quickly? Which solver controls should be exposed to the user (e.g., Raoult’s law parameters, saturation pressure, Hertz–Knudsen coefficients)? Do you have any existing curves for saturation pressure or activity coefficients for H2O/O2, and how many components should be supported beyond the test case? Are there any specific convergence criteria or time-stepping limits you want for the coupled system? Should I include a rubric for validating energy balance across the interface?
