Project Description: CFD–FSI Analysis of Flexible Flapping Wing Aerodynamics This project focuses on the numerical investigation of unsteady aerodynamics of a flapping wing with flexible deformation using coupled Fluid–Structure Interaction (FSI) simulations. The objective is to understand how wing flexibility and deformation affect vortex formation, wake evolution, pressure distribution, and aerodynamic force generation (lift and thrust). The study will be carried out using transient CFD coupled with structural deformation, where the wing undergoes prescribed flapping motion and deforms under aerodynamic loads. The interaction between fluid flow and structural response will be analyzed over multiple flapping cycles. Key Scope of Work Perform transient CFD simulations of a flapping wing. Implement two-way FSI coupling to capture wing deformation and flexibility effects. Analyze velocity fields, pressure contours, vortices, and wake structures. Study the influence of flapping frequency, amplitude, and flow conditions (Reynolds number) on aerodynamic performance. Compare rigid vs flexible wing behavior to quantify the effect of deformation. Examine wake periodicity, vortex shedding, and jet-like flow structures over multiple cycles. Extend simulations to 3D flapping wings and study tip vortex interactions. Expected Outcomes Time-resolved flow visualization (velocity, pressure, vorticity). Lift and thrust variation over flapping cycles. Understanding of how FSI-based deformation enhances or alters aerodynamic performance. Validation through mesh refinement or alternative turbulence models. Skills Required Strong experience in CFD (ANSYS Fluent / OpenFOAM / STAR-CCM+ or similar). Hands-on knowledge of FSI coupling (ANSYS System Coupling or equivalent). Understanding of unsteady aerodynamics, vortex dynamics, and flapping-wing physics. Ability to post-process and interpret transient flow data. This project is suitable for a freelancer with expertise in aerodynamics, CFD, and fluid–structure interaction, especially in biomimetic or MAV-related simulations.
