Add features to software c# .net

I have some windows software made in visual studio 2019 c# .net
I want to add features to. The software was created July 2020 and was used for a few weeks. I tried to use it today and got a malware error. Does that mean the previous developer put malicious code in or is their another way this could have occured?
I have the source code I need to add new features to it and secure it so I don't have future issues.
