Creative Brief: "Not So Famous Mugs on Mugs" Portrait Series 1. Project Overview & Brand Vision The objective is to commission a series of high-quality, single-colour portrait illustrations for a premium, collectible line of camp mugs. The brand celebrates "unsung heroes"—remarkable historical figures who quietly changed the world but never received mainstream fame. The brand aesthetic bridges a rugged, outdoor Australian campfire vibe with intellectual, curiosity-driven conversation. 2. Deliverables Required For Volume 1, the artist will deliver four (4) distinct portrait illustrations based on a provided list of historical figures. Each figure requires: The Portrait: The main historical character illustration. The Nameplate: The individual's name hand-lettered by the artist. Crucial: The name must be delivered as a separate, isolated layer so it can be omitted or repositioned depending on the medium. 3. Visual & Aesthetic Guidelines Style: High-texture pencil/graphite sketch style. The artwork must feel authentically hand-drawn, intimate, and human—avoid perfectly smooth digital vector lines. Composition: Focus primarily on a detailed headshot/portrait. Where appropriate and contextually relevant, a subtle "tool of the trade" or symbolic item can be woven into the background, but the human face remains the focal point. Framing & Framing Edges: No circular, square, or arched frames or borders. No soft vignette or gradient fade-outs at the edges. The drawing should have clean, definitive line-work boundaries where the sketch naturally terminates. Colour Palette: Monochrome (Single Colour). All final files must be delivered in a single, classic vintage/navy blue tone. 4. Technical Specifications & Asset Versatility Because these illustrations will anchor the entire brand, they must function seamlessly across diverse digital and physical touchpoints. Format: Delivered as layered, high-resolution source files (PSD, Procreate, or high-res vector AI/EPS) with a completely transparent background. Asset Breakdown: * Layer 1: The Portrait Artwork. Layer 2: Background elements/items (if applicable). Layer 3: Hand-lettered Name. Cross-Platform Requirements: The Product: Must scale perfectly onto a standard tin/enamel camp mug face. Line weights must be bold enough to withstand a high-heat printing process on textured metal surfaces without turning into "mud" or losing fine detail. Packaging: Crisp enough for monochrome printing directly onto cardboard kraft boxes. Digital & Social Media: Layers must be easily isolated so assets can be handed over to an animator for motion graphics (e.g., text fading in separately from the portrait) on TikTok and Instagram Reels. 4.1 Physical Sizing & Legibility Constraints (Added Specification) Target Product: Standard 350ml metal/enamel camp mug (Approximate dimensions: 80mm height × 80mm diameter). Maximum Print Area Dimensions: The safe print area for the portrait side is a maximum of 65mm Width × 65mm Height. Legibility & Fine Detail Constraint: Because the physical print size is constrained to a 65mm square on a curved surface, the artist must ensure the portrait remains highly legible and visually impactful at a small scale. Avoid overly dense cross-hatching or hyper-fine lines that risk blurring or turning into solid blocks of ink during the high-heat wrap printing process. The illustration must rely on clean, deliberate line weights that retain clarity when viewed from an arm's length while drinking. 4.2Back Copy Typography & Layout Constraints (Added Specification) Font Size Standard: The text layout on the reverse side of the mug must be set at a minimum of 10pt font size to ensure clear legibility from an arm's length while holding the mug. Font Style & Selection: Because the high-heat firing process can cause minor surface distortions on enamelware, decorative or overly complex fonts must be avoided. The typography must use: A clean, geometric sans-serif (e.g., Helvetica, Futura, or similar clean digital fonts). Or a highly legible, crisp slab-serif that provides sharp contrast against the hand-drawn pencil line-work of the portrait on the opposite side. High-Contrast Testing: All text layouts must be tested with high-contrast alignment during the digital mockup stage before being approved for physical production manufacturing.
