In this option, you will draw on your understanding of relationships between children’s play/inquiry and
their development and learning to analyse video-clips of young children’s play / inquiry
PART A) Choose two of the provided video clips (links will be provided from the ECH113 blackboard
website) and complete the following for each clip (approximately 500 words per clip):
1. Provide a rich description of the child or children’s actions as they play.
2. Identify two developmental and/or curriculum areas to focus on for that clip and:
a. Analyse what the child/ren’s play/inquiry or inquiry tells you about their current
developmental achievements and curriculum-related learning.
b. Analyse the potential of this play for promoting further development and learning. Please
link your analysis to relevant theoretical explanations of why and how this play/inquiry
may promote a particular area of development.
PART B) Choose one of the clips chosen in Part A to complete the following (approximately 500 words):
3. Generate one idea for a play/inquiry experience that you think could be used to extend the
children’s development and/or learning further. Document your idea as follows:
a. Describe your idea, including the materials that you would use and how you might ‘set up’
b. Explain briefly how this experience is linked to the one observed in the clip (i.e. how have
you followed the children’s interests, motivations and current learning/developmental
c. Explain how you think that the children’s engagement will promote their development
and/or learning. Make sure you identify specific areas of development/learning.
d. Identify your own role/s in the experience, and explain how your participation may foster
the children’s development and/or learning.
