The uncanny points to what is alien or foreign about the things or people we think we know well, including ourselves. Think about how odd your recorded voice sounds to you upon first hearing it. It takes you a while to realize that that’s you, that you sound like that. This sense of alienation and familiarity defines the uncanny. Drawing on at least two of the texts included, write an essay that explores how love and/or intimacy can resemble the uncanny.
Organize your essay around a clearly articulated thesis. Support your thesis with textual evidence and/or experiences that you then analyze in order to make your claims more convincing. Organize your evidence in well-constructed paragraphs that are unified under topic sentences that the paragraphs then logically develop. I’m looking for how well you develop your ideas throughout the essay. Remember to write with an audience in mind. While I’m your primary audience, your essay should be understood by anyone not familiar with the texts you’re writing about or the discussions we’ve been having in class. I’m also looking for how well you show relation between the paragraphs.
Avoid absolute statements, vague generalizations, and clichés. Don't bore me.
Don’t forget to title the essay (title should echo the thesis).
