To further understand the functioning of the European Commission, each student will conduct an individual case study of a Directorate General of the European Commission. Each student will select one Directorate General of the European Commission (sign-up list will be made available in class on March 16, 2016. For those students unable to attend class, email Prof. Yiannibas for your assigned DG).
The assignment is designed to not only identify the structure and focus of the selected Directorate General but also to make an assessment of the relation of the DG to citizens. Each student should use the following outline for their case study:
I. Organizational Structure
Explain the management structure
Identify the Director General
Identify the responsible Commissioner
Identify Related Agencies and their locations
II. Policy and Programmes
Explain the mission and objectives of the Directorate General
Identify key programmes and projects
III. Evaluation
Analyze and evaluate the Directorate General's commitment to transparency and public participation: explain what initiatives the Directorate General has undertaken to provide direct and uncomplicated information to EU citizens as well as any ways that EU citizens are invited to participate
Critical analysis: How could the Directorate General improve? What are the strengths and weaknesses that you perceive?
