I am developing Spear Vision, a professional-grade diving and freediving mask with an integrated underwater camera for freediving and spearfishing. I am looking for an experienced industrial designer/mechanical engineer with underwater product, rugged electronics, wearable technology, or dive-equipment experience to help develop the first functional prototype. Product concept The product will be a diving mask with an integrated camera system designed for use underwater. The target specifications are: 4K video recording Strong low-light performance, potentially using a Sony STARVIS-type image sensor Target operating depth of approximately 30 metres Internal rechargeable battery Magnetic or pogo-pin charging connection Internal eMMC or similar flash storage Wireless data transfer to a smartphone when the user is on the surface or in a boat Wired data transfer as a backup option Professional, durable construction rather than a disposable action-camera design Minimal need to open the housing, reducing the risk of seal damage Heat dissipation through a metal heat spreader or heat sink connected to the housing The product must be designed with comfort, balance, visibility, waterproofing, serviceability, and diver safety in mind. Scope of work I would like assistance with the following: Product architecture Recommend a practical layout for the camera, battery, storage, charging system, and electronics. Assess whether the electronics should be integrated into the mask body, a detachable module, or a separate sealed pod. Identify major technical risks and recommended solutions. Mechanical and industrial design Develop the external form and internal arrangement of the product. Maintain a comfortable fit and appropriate weight distribution. Prevent the camera and electronics from obstructing the diver’s vision. Design suitable access points for professional servicing without requiring frequent opening. Consider corrosion-resistant materials suitable for saltwater use. Waterproof housing design Design a sealed enclosure suitable for the target depth. Specify appropriate O-rings, gaskets, seals, fasteners, and materials. Consider pressure loading, lens-window strength, mechanical tolerances, and galvanic corrosion. Produce a sealing strategy that can be pressure-tested and repeatedly serviced. Thermal management Develop a practical method for transferring heat from the electronics to the external housing or surrounding water. Consider heat spreaders, thermal pads, conductive materials, and electrical isolation. Identify possible overheating risks during 4K recording. Prototype-ready CAD Create detailed 3D CAD models of the housing and relevant components. Provide manufacturing drawings with dimensions, tolerances, materials, and surface finishes. Design parts suitable for CNC machining, injection molding, or high-quality prototype manufacturing. Include mounting features for the camera lens, circuit board, battery, storage, magnets, charging contacts, and seals. Prototype development support Recommend suitable prototype materials and manufacturing methods. Help prepare a bill of materials. Identify off-the-shelf components where appropriate. Support the transition from an early prototype to a more manufacturable design. Testing plan Create a preliminary test plan for: Leak testing Pressure testing Repeated opening and resealing Saltwater exposure Corrosion Thermal performance Impact and drop resistance Camera and charging reliability Clearly identify which tests must be performed by a qualified laboratory or specialist manufacturer. Expected deliverables The selected freelancer should ideally provide: Initial feasibility assessment Product architecture proposal Concept sketches or layout options 3D CAD assembly Detailed housing and component models Engineering drawings Seal and gasket specifications Preliminary bill of materials Thermal-management concept Prototype manufacturing recommendations Risk assessment and design-for-manufacturing recommendations Waterproof and pressure-testing plan Documentation that can later be provided to an electronics engineer, prototype manufacturer, or investor Important limitations This is an early-stage project, and I am currently working with a limited development budget. I would prefer to proceed in phases, rather than commissioning a complete production-ready design immediately. The first phase should focus on: Reviewing the concept Identifying major technical risks Producing a practical mechanical layout Creating an initial CAD concept Estimating the cost and complexity of a functional prototype The first prototype does not need to be production-ready, but it must be designed professionally enough to support further testing and development. The freelancer must not assume that a 3D-printed housing is automatically safe for diving. Any prototype intended for underwater use must be pressure-tested appropriately, and the final product will require professional engineering validation. Ideal freelancer experience Please apply only if you have relevant experience in one or more of the following: Underwater cameras or dive equipment Waterproof or pressure-resistant enclosures Rugged electronics Wearable technology Consumer electronics housings Industrial design for outdoor or marine products O-ring and gasket sealing CNC-machined or molded waterproof components Thermal management for compact electronics Saltwater-resistant materials and corrosion prevention Design for manufacturing Experience with SolidWorks, Fusion 360, Creo, or a comparable professional CAD platform is preferred. Application requirements Please include: Examples of similar underwater, sealed, wearable, or ruggedized products Your experience designing pressure-resistant housings The CAD software you use Your proposed approach to the project Your estimated hourly rate or price for the first phase The estimated time required for the first phase Any technical concerns you immediately see in this concept I am particularly interested in a freelancer who can give honest engineering feedback and identify problems early, rather than simply producing attractive 3D models.

Spear Vision is exactly the kind of product where the mechanical architecture has to be proven before investing heavily in detailed CAD. I’d approach Phase 1 as an engineering feasibility exercise, not simply a 3D modelling task. I can review the concept and develop an initial architecture covering the camera/electronics module, battery, storage, charging interface, heat path, lens window, sealing strategy and mounting arrangement. I’ll specifically evaluate weight distribution, field of view, serviceability, corrosion exposure and the implications of a ~30 m operating depth. The first CAD concept would establish the housing geometry, component packaging, sealing interfaces and realistic manufacturing approach, while identifying the areas that require pressure/thermal/electrical validation before moving toward a functional prototype. One immediate concern I would investigate is the combination of 4K recording, internal battery and compact sealed volume: thermal transfer, pressure-rated lens/window design and repeated O-ring servicing need to be solved together rather than independently. I would also avoid treating a printed enclosure as dive-safe without appropriate pressure testing and validation. For Phase 1, I can provide the feasibility assessment, architecture/layout options, initial CAD assembly, preliminary BOM, key risks, prototype manufacturing recommendations and a structured next-phase plan. Best Regards, Sumit Kumar.

Are you looking for an Underwater Camera Housing & Wearable Product Design Expert? I am Ahmad. I have 9+ years of experience in SolidWorks, mechanical CAD, rugged product enclosures, wearable product design, sealing, DFM and prototype development. I can support the first phase of Spear Vision with a practical engineering-focused approach rather than simply creating concept visuals. I specifically evaluate O-rings, lens/window interfaces, corrosion-resistant materials, fasteners, charging contacts and pressure-sensitive areas before developing the initial CAD concept. Phase 1 Deliverables Feasibility and technical-risk assessment Product architecture proposal Internal component/layout concept Initial 3D CAD housing concept Sealing and serviceability strategy Preliminary thermal-management concept Prototype manufacturing recommendations Initial BOM/component recommendations DFM considerations Preliminary pressure/leak testing plan Prototype cost and complexity estimate Why Choose Me My focus is on functional mechanical design, manufacturability and identifying risks early. I will not assume that a 3D-printed enclosure is dive-safe; pressure testing and professional engineering validation will be required before underwater use. I work primarily with SolidWorks and can develop the design in phases so your initial budget is focused on validating the architecture before committing to full production engineering.

Hi, how are you? I understand you need an industrial designer or mechanical engineer with underwater or rugged electronics experience to develop the first functional prototype of Spear Vision, a diving mask with an integrated 4K camera targeting 30 metres, internal battery, magnetic or pogo-pin charging, internal storage, wireless and wired transfer, sealed housing with minimal opening, and thermal management through a heat spreader. The first phase should focus on reviewing the concept, identifying major technical risks, producing a practical mechanical layout, creating an initial CAD concept, and estimating prototype cost and complexity. On experience, I served as Mechanical Design Engineer on a Pressure-Resistant Underwater Enclosure for a marine electronics client, specifying O-rings, seals, lens window strength, tolerances, and saltwater-resistant materials, and as Industrial Designer on a Rugged Wearable Camera Housing, handling internal layout, thermal management, charging contacts, and design for manufacture in SolidWorks. I use SolidWorks and Fusion 360. One immediate concern: 30-metre depth with a mask-mounted camera means pressure loading on the lens window, seal reliability, and weight distribution on the face all need early attention, and any housing must be pressure-tested rather than assumed safe. I'm ready to start work immediately. Best Regards

hello there, I would be interested in starting with your proposed Phase 1 rather than jumping straight into a production design. My approach would be to first review the concept and establish the mechanical architecture: where the camera, battery, PCB, storage and charging interface should be positioned, how the enclosure can be sealed and serviced, and how the weight and heat can be managed without interfering with the diver's vision or comfort. A few areas I would investigate immediately are the pressure loading at approximately 30 m, O-ring/gasket geometry and compression, lens-window strength, galvanic corrosion between dissimilar materials, heat transfer from the electronics to the housing, and how the charging interface can remain reliable in a saltwater environment. I also appreciate that you specifically stated that a 3D-printed enclosure should not simply be assumed to be dive-safe. Any underwater prototype should be treated as an engineering prototype and appropriately pressure-tested before being used at depth. My goal would be to give you an honest assessment of what will work, what needs further validation, and where the major risks are—before those problems become expensive during prototyping. Best regards, Oluwasogo

I bring more than 10 years of experience in mechanical design, machinery development and industrial systems, working from concept through to manufacturing. For this product design project, I can apply that experience to develop a compact, robust mechanical solution ready for prototyping and validation. I would first focus on key aspects of the product architecture: which electronic components are already defined — camera/sensor, lens, PCB, battery, memory and charging system — and whether dimensions, datasheets or CAD models are available, together with power consumption or heat generation during 4K recording. I consider thermal dissipation a potential critical point in this project. I would also like to understand the intended scope of Phase 1, particularly whether the first prototype should validate the architecture and packaging, or be ready from the start for pressure testing at 30 m. With this information, I can work on mechanical integration, component layout, sealing, optical window, thermal management, balance, materials, tolerances, serviceability and manufacturability, developing parametric CAD and the documentation required for prototyping. My approach would be to resolve the architecture and main mechanical risks first, without assuming that a solution that looks correct in CAD will necessarily perform correctly under real operating and validation conditions. Best regards, Walter

Dear Client, At 30 m depth, the housing sees roughly 3 bar external pressure differential. The biggest risk is not simply making it waterproof—it is keeping the lens window, O-ring compression, charging contacts, thermal path and saltwater-exposed materials reliable through repeated pressure and service cycles. I have 11+ years of electronics/product-development experience across 500+ assignments involving compact electronics, camera/PCB integration, battery systems, thermal management, sensors and prototype validation. My approach: Architecture → Pressure Envelope → Camera/Lens Window → Battery/Electronics Layout → Thermal Path → Charging → Prototype I would focus on O-ring gland geometry, pressure-loaded surfaces, lens-window distortion, galvanic corrosion, condensation, weight distribution and service access. I can support feasibility, electronics-mechanical architecture, internal component layout, PCB/battery integration, thermal strategy, CAD coordination, BOM, prototype planning and validation requirements. Two important questions: 1. What maximum acceptable camera-module size/weight can the mask carry? 2. Should the camera module be permanently integrated or removable from the mask? Profile: https://www.freelancer.in/u/ElectronicsMust If you message me, I’ll tell you the three architecture decisions I would freeze before CAD because they determine whether the 30 m prototype can be pressure-tested safely. Kind Regards, Avi Gupta Quality is never an accident
