Hello, we have a Kontron X-board 861 module that doesn't boot the linux system it has installed in the flash memory. When the system is started, the LILO loader stops in the letter "L"…We think is somekind of corruption in the MBR of the flash memory. The module is installed as part of a Varian 450 Gas Chromatograph. Neither Varian nor Kontron give support as this is legacy equipment. We have another identical module installed in other system that works ok. We've tried several times to access the flash memory, without success. We neeed external guidance on how to continue. I have a small hard drive that is 16gb, it has 1 Linux partition on. I shrinked the partition partition down to 5gb and test booted to make sure it works. I want to make a backup of this partition and be able to restore it onto a flash drive. I have tired multiple times to do this and it will not boot. So I tried saving the hard drives MBR to an image by using the command 'dd if=dev/sda of= bs=512 count=1` and then restoring it onto the usb drive with 'dd if= of=dev/sda bs=446 count=1' This worked but I dont want to have to use 2 commands to do this. I have tried to back up the harddrive from the 1st sector to the last sector of the end partition. How can I do this and get an img or iso file to be able to restore onto any drive and boot the linux that I have? Im sure ...

I need to create a program that automates a process. In my case, I want to extract MFT entries that have a deleted flag. The logic behind the program would be: 1) scan a disk image 2) from the MBR, at an exact offset, extract the location of the Boot sector 3) from the boot sector, at an exact offset, extract the location of the MFT 4) from the MFT, extract all the MFT entries that have a specific flag (deleted).
