Résumé de concours

Collaboration? No Blue-Noses Need Apply

Hello, my name is Robert Velasquez VanDeHey (or ‘Rajjpuut’) and I’m looking for a cartoon artist (or perhaps as many as three working on independent projects) to collaborate on my cartooning ideas for international magazines such as Playboy, etc. What’s in it for you? A 60/40 split (you receive 60%, but pay all postage). Spanish language skill is a plus, but not absolutely necessary (I’ll explain Spanish punctuation to you IF necessary). The same is true of standard caricature skills. What mainly counts is that almost indefinable ability to portray a wild, joy-filled sense of humor -- which I haven’t been able to cultivate under my own pens. Who are you? Someone who believes 'sex is beautiful,' but also 'a truly laughing matter.'

The finished product is marketed by you with my ‘lyrical’ contribution acknowledged by adding ‘& Rajjpuut’ after your own artist signature. What’s this all about? I've long been trying to teach myself to cartoon. After about six years, I have to admit that I'm a horrible failure with the pens. I have, however, come up with between 4,200 and 4,300 individual cartoon ideas to sell to specific magazines, U.S. and foreign both, celebrating sex hijinks via ultra-soft porn-style (but at times somewhat explicitly) risqué humor . . . Is it funny? often gut-splittingly so, in my not-so- humble-opinion. One possible exception, cartoon books created after each 'toon's 1st-publication splits profits 50-50.
Interested? All may apply: but selection will be via a three-stage elimination process. Stage One: send me both a black & white; and a color original new cartoon – subject matter of your choice – otherwise identical. Two weeks after reception deadline, those cartoons are yours to sell. Stage TWO: Eight (8) finalists will be notified within three weeks unless volume of submissions is ‘ungodly high,’ all with the same 100% identical challenge presented to them: one color cartoon designed to my specs, the cartoonists may sell for 50-50 split to any magazine two weeks past that deadline. Stage THREE: might not occur en todo. It would include a portfolio and list of magazines published in; and a phone interview; at the very least; and one other challenge only to be described for the last 3-5 successful challengers. Send Stage ONE 8 1/2 by 11s to: RPV 4784 Kerry Lynn View Colorado Springs, CO 80922
Good luck!
Your future collaborator, Rajjpuut

Marina M., only very, very rarely does a single-character's picture amount to a sale-worthy cartoon. Sorry you pulled your 2nd effort. Get something down on paper (simple, clear characters and any interesting situation). And damn it, somebody please send me a quality cartoon (two copies as you know) to my home address in accord with the collaborator-position 'contest' rules you all have read.

Looks, to me, like Mijalo is the only potential cartoonist with the guts to create an actual cartoon (situation and characters) here. Offhand, seeing his second effort, IF we were already collaborating, I'd have had him add the punchline . . . "Put down that video-game -- damn it!" Of course, I've now got almost 4,900 cartoon ideas stored up and in my collaboration files, however, so the normal situation would be be providing the verbiage and story-line and him creating the cartoon characters and situations. But now there's a huge problem for me, HUGE! But up to right now, not a single entry for Stage I has arrived at my home address (a black and white; and a color one of the same cartoon) and it appears that time will run out. Very disappointing . . . .

Marina, time's a-wasting! Create a winning situation and cartoon (humor is NOT necessary in stage #1, so you choose) and send the two copies I need damn quickly (black and white; and color of the same cartoon). Good luck!

To All potential contestants. TIME IS RUNNING OUT! Yes, draw us something here for the $10 contest and get fairly quick feedback and commentary for improvement and what I'm looking for . . . But the real immediacy is to send me two copies of just one cartoon; one in color and one in black and white virtually immediately to meet the collaboration job deadline for stage #1. Good Luck. PS: so far NO ONE has sent me the required stage #1 entry, people. Get with it, NOW!

It shows that I've received a public entry here from an artist named Jesus S. But I don't see any such submission. Jesus, Please resubmit. Thanks and DO look over the real contest rules to get a collaborator's job, not just $10.

Mijalo, you've got a challenger now. Like Marina M., for you: simplicity and clarity is vital. Faces and bodies turned toward us would be helpful; or perhaps away, but we see their reflection in a lake; or a mirror; a puddle; or a shiny car?!!! AND Humor with or without words can't hurt. Remember, $10 is OK, but this is a 'contest' for a collaboration job and magazines publishing your work and mine! Submit something accordingly to my home address: one cartoon, two copies one in color, one in Black and White.

Thumbs up!!! for Marina M. for instant improvement! Remember humor comes from situations and characters. #3 by Marina M. illustrates Simplicity and Clarity (A-1) -- now add a bit of HUMOR (the goofy facial expressions are primed for almost any type of humor you can add. More importantly in your next (humorous) cartoon created, send a B&W and a color copy (2 cartoons otherwise identical) to my home address per the 'contest' instructions!! One hint: perhaps older protagonists and a different more surprised; or shocked; or 'I thought so!' expression on the dog might help?!

ALL potential cartoonists, no effort means failure every time, what've you got to lose? Think what you're working to win!! Read the last two comments to Mijalo and Marina M. Simple, clear, and professional cartoon creation -- give it a shot!! Enter a good effort here. But DO read the rules and send an exemplary cartoon (2 copies of the same cartoon: 1 copy in B&W; 1 in Color) to my home address. Good luck Marina, Mijalo, and ALL of you. A CAREER in Cartooning!

Marina M., Clarity, Clarity, Clarity. Simplicity, Simplicity, Simplicity. We’re talking about getting your cartoons of my ideas getting both of US published in Playboy, etc. Yes, Yes, Do it right here on the site. But more importantly, read the 'contest' rules and follow the instructions by sending an exemplary cartoon (2 copies of the same cartoon: 1 copy in B&W; 1 in Color) to my home address as instructed in the 'contest' rules. $10 is OK, but nothing -- because we're talking about a lifetime career! Let's see your best!

Thanks a lot, Mihajlo, your skill is obvious. Again, the offer is for a long, long-term job collaborating with your cartoon ability and my situational imagination. Three things, I'd suggest: 1) the collaboration will be depicting humorous situations, remember that! 2) People are the subject, pure and simple keep that always in mind and 3) Humor demands clarity: clear situations; clear body depictions and especially clear facial expressions and gestures. Do re-read my instructions carefully for Stage #1 . One more thing: based up the factors I just mentioned, I'd rate the big first drawing of yours just two stars. However, the potential shown by your pic with the old lady and of the ship earn you three stars. Thanks again for your un-official entry.

I did get one question from a young artist I told about the freelancer.com website. He wanted to know IF multiple submissions were OK. Sure, but let's say two cartoons in Black-and-White and the very same two color toons identical in every way except coloring. I'm looking for consistent very strong work in both mediums . . . so remember a marked difference in your quality between color and Black and White; or between one cartoon and another might well be a deal-killer. So when in doubt, one cartoon in both Black and White; and Color is probably the best for virtually all 'contestants.' Remember, this is NOT really a 'contest,' but actually a 3-step 'interview' for a long-term job as a collaborating-cartoonist. Good luck!

Hello Worthy Cartoonists, those who've CAREFULLY read the particulars of my search and yours will have noticed: 1) this effort of mine and yours is not to find a contest-winner, but instead a long-term business-partner and 2) your work is only seen by me, you have nothing public to lose or to prove. But, since Marina M. did put herself out there for public review, here's what she and all of you can learn from her effort . . . DOs & DON'Ts I'm hoping for a 'cleaner' over-all image; and more efficient message carried by your work. The intended audience is virtually all males and some liberated females. Also: virtually all controversy is a NO-NO . . .

Hello Worthy Cartoonists, message cont'd . . . virtually all controversy is a NO-NO . . . for example, among the 4,000+ thousands of simple cartoon ideas I've created (and am still creating) there are no abortions; no heavy-handed population control (like Red China's single-child policy); and almost no comic references to the downside (STDs, herpes, AIDS, etc.). Light-hearted sex (presumably safe and mutually-desired upon). If negatives appear, they do so in a breezy funny manner that might serve as a bad-example reminder. In short: the message is sex is wonderful; sex is beautiful; sex is natural; and SEX is very much 'A LAUGHING MATTER! Thanks, and Good Luck, Rajjpuut
