The favicon could be also animated, but it's not mandatory.

#34 why not just keep it simple? You'll lose a lot of tiny detail when it's taken down to 32px X 32px or 16px X 16px.

  Not to be argumentative but I'm afraid you'll have to settle for something simple. A favicon is going to be very small. A 32 x 32 image = 1,024 pixels...which sounds like a lot but it really isn't. My avatar on the left (the blue and white eagle for the Washington Capitals logo) it's made up of 10,000 pixels. That's small. Point is, you're going to lose A LOT of detail scaling an image down to that size and I'm not confident you understand that.

  Yes, the size is very important. It must be fully visible when you scale it to the right dimension of the favicon. if you have a complex design with thin lines it won't show the same in the adress bar and some elements won't be visible at all.
