The year is 2168. With endless resources, and legal ownership of the world’s technology, nine corporations have basically gained control of the Earth. The world still has 190 governments, but they are all heavily reliant on the private sector to provide services and conduct administration. The most powerful of these is Elemenopi. 160 years ago, it began as the children’s version of a popular search engine. It has since moved into internet-enabled children’s toys, then education and testing services, and then education technology.

ERIN (Elemenopi Realistic Interface Network) is a highly advanced artificial intelligence, and Emma’s boss. She is fair and understanding, but sports a brisk, no-nonsense attitude. She is fiercely loyal to the corporation that created her, and thinks of Victoria Pyne as a mother.

Dr. Victoria “Granny” Pyne is a very old, but very brilliant engineer, and the last survivor of the fabled “Gang of Eight” whose inventions revived Elemenopi more than a century ago. She devoted her life to science, to the exclusion of everything else, and is often awkward, bitter, and antisocial. She is only passionate about science and ERIN, whom she considers family.

Captain Emanuel Azikwe is only the Unified Space Administration’s third African captain, and the first to represent Nigeria’s budding space exploration program. He is warm, sociable and open, a good motivator, and slow to panic, but he harbors resentment for the Western world for ignoring his rapidly growing country. He hopes the Olivia’s mission, the first major resupply of Ares Station, the newly-founded Mars colony, will change that.

The Militia An advanced military unit that has enslaved the last remnants of Mars’ population and secured its technology for the Earth. They perform the same function on the other inner planets, helping Earth to manage a small empire
