Design a Visual System of Logos for the "Blood, Water & Blater" Competition

Contest Brief

I need to design a visual system of 3 logos that look are different but are visually similar and related, i.e. that they look like they're from the same family of logos but each is unique.

The purpose of these logos are to be used in competition with three teams; as a result, each logo should look and feel like a crest. I have added a screenshot of some 'crest' designs; use these as a guide but do not be limited by what you see here, please be creative with this one.

The teams are called "Blood", "Water" and "Blater" and the competition is run within a family unit. Each team has its own back story, which relates to the overall story; which I'll outline in detail below.

---- BLOOD ----
Blood is the team of patriarchs and matriarchs in the family; these family members are the ones that started it all, they're the blood of the family. Blood is thicker than water. Blood is old (the oldest team in the competition), strong, has a rich history and as a result believes they should win by default, which is often not the case.

---- WATER ----
Water is the team of spouses that have married into the family. Water are nurturing, quick-witted, jovial, fun, mischievous, highly competitive and sometimes surprisingly aggressive.

---- BLATER ----
Blater is the team of children/offspring that have been produced by members of Blood & Water. Blater (Bl(ood)-(w)ater), is a complete mix of blood and water. Blater is young, energetic, fun and has reinvigorated the competiton. Please note, sometimes blater needs to be split into two teams, so assist us in a provision to allow an appendage to this crest, so we could for example use the same crest for Blater (Team A) & Blater (Team B).

---- THE VISUAL SYSTEM ----
This competition has been running for 10 years in our family. We are an Italian family living in Sydney, Australia. Many of us were born Australian, but we have a strong italian heritage which keeps us together. This competition has been run to ensure that, at least once a year, everyone comes together for a complete family day. The activities that we compete in change from year to year, but the overarching ideas is that we compete against each other to make great memories and have a bit of loving competition between us. These crests will be attached to our family for years to come. Please take care with them when you're designing and remember that the visual system MUST be connected, because between these teams we are all from the same family.

Finally, some additional notes:
Each logo will be printed on t-shirts and used on a trophy. So we'll need them to be a vector images that we can easily get embossed or engraved on something.
I think something simple would be nice, rather than baroque. Though, I envisage each logo with a colour scheme that matches their title, i.e. blood with a deep red, water with a light blue and blater with something in-between this.

Hi everyone, thanks so much for your entries, they look awesome and some have really gone beyond my expectations. However, as this is a family thing it has been hard to reach consensus on what we all want (very hard to make decisions with a group of 40 family members).
