This contest is to design a logo for 'Principle Cigars,' and a cigar band and label for their new 'Aviator' series of cigars.

If mutually agreeable, there can be more work on additional cigar lines for the winner of this contest.

First, some general notes on the overall style and look of all artwork:

The name of the cigar company is 'PRINCIPLE CIGARS.' All artwork needs to be strong, nicely stylized, classic, elegant, bold, perhaps even haunting. It almost certainly needs to have elements of Art Deco or Art Nouveau. It should NOT be cartoon-like, funny, corny, modern, too simple or overly complicated. See the attached file, 'Style Examples.jpg' to see some looks that work for us as well as what some other people are doing.

1 - LOGO CREATION FOR 'PRINCIPLE CIGARS': This is the part of this project with the least restrictions. The style is extremely important, so please refer to Style Examples.jpg for inspiration. It might be good if there is a hint of an aviation theme to the artwork, as Principle's top cigars are called 'Aviators.' This line will use early French Airship imagery. To see examples of these airships see 'Airship Examples.jpg.'

2 - CIGAR BAND: The cigar band will probably be printed in gold using embossing only, so it can be designed in two colors. To see labels printed this way, look at the attached file, '4lab.jpg.' I say 'probably,' because we are still willing to look at other ideas. The approximate size of the cigar band is shown in the attached file 'size.jpg.' This size is approximate and is just meant as a guide. It does not need to be exact and you can change the exterior shape to accommodate your design. The only parts that are somewhat firm are the overall length of the long portion and the position at which the round portion sits on that length.

Whatever style is adopted for the logo and label should be carried out through this cigar band. If the logo has Egyptian Art Deco 1920s lines, so should the band. The band needs to say 'Principle Cigars,' perhaps with each word on either side of the center portion. It should have some element of the aviation theme but not mention aviation anywhere, as it will be used on cigars other than in the Aviator series.

3 - CIGAR LABEL: This will be a metallic label/tag for the top of the different cigar boxes in the Aviator Series of cigars. It should be horizontally-oriented (landscape), but the exact shape is up to you. They do not need to be rectangular, they can be die-cut. Like the cigar band, these will be printed in metal, but with a thicker material. To see some examples of metal labels, look at the attached file, 'metal.jpg.'

The label/tag should have some sort of airship aviation imagery. The look should be very stylized- again, see Style Examples.jpg. It should include the phrase, 'Aviator Series.' It should also contain the slogan, 'Some have plans, few have principles.'

Hello, everyone,
Thank you all so much for submitting designs. People seem to be missing the mark on a few key things, so I just wanted to outline them again here:

- This needs to seem like a vintage design. Not a slick, modern design with some retro elements to it, it needs to feel old.

- The art deco, or nouveau/deco transitional style needs to be adhered to. See the attached style examples.

- The design needs to be serious, strong and clean. NOT playful, cartoon-like or fun.

- You do not have to design all three parts, I am happy to look at anything. A logo, style example, etc. I am happy to tell you if you are on the right track before a large amount of time is invested.

  My goal is to use the metal tag on the top of all of the boxes in the aviator line, so it would need to fit on the smallest box. I would worry about the proportion more than the actual size. 6" x 9"? It won't be that large, but those proportions will work.
  
  But the most important thing for me is to see that you can work in the styles of which I outlined and gave examples. If you can do it than I know we will be able to come up with designs that work. There needs to be a strong art deco or transitional art nouveau/deco feel to this artwork.
  
  You would be surprised how many people just ignore everything you write and show and come up with things that are not at all for what you are asking.

  This design does not in any way follow the very specific style guidelines and examples that I outlined in the contest. I have no way of knowing that you are capable of this based on this design.
  
  How am I able to give you feedback on a design that is totally different from what I am asking? That's great that you designed something for a cigar bar, but if all you've ever designed was fruit labels but in the style that I need you would be better suited.
  
  Please study the illustrations that I attached, read my outline carefully and I look forward to looking at any submission.
