Résumé du concours

I am looking for a 3D modeler to create around 100-150 simple "paper" models. This contest is the application process. Each applicant will create 5 models as described. The winner will receive $50 for those 5 models AND will earn a contract, worth over $1,000 to provide 100-150 more simple "paper" models!

These models are like nothing you have seen before. Take a look at the example models for an idea of what I'm looking for. In these examples, there are two pieces of "paper" that combine to form a 3D humanoid figure. Each piece of "paper" in the model can be unfolded into a flat pattern without overlap. So, the 3D models could be created in the real world. This is key.

If you look at the models you will also see that they look quite blocky. That is my limitation as a 3D modeller. I'm an engineer and I am good at modeling non-organic things, but I'm poor at organic modeling. That's why I need help. I'm looking for a 3D modeler who can model organic things, but also has a mechanical mind and can understand how shaping and folding "paper" can create incredible looking 3D models.

Okay, enough background, let's get to the details:

For this contest, you will design 5 simple "paper" models for evaluation. I do not expect any textures on the models.

I am providing 5 sets of concept art. This art depicts what I want modeled. The type of person/creature, the pose, the equipment. It is not to be used as a texture. It is just concept art.

The scale of the model should be ~28mm, which means a standard 6-foot tall human would be about 28mm tall. For non-standard height humanoids, please see the linked chart for relative scale.

Notes:
1) Notice the shape, design, and scale of the head in the model. Please do not change the general design and scale of the head compared to the body. Females may have a more feminine shaped head if appropriate.
2) Notice the interface of the shoulders to the neck in the fighter model. Please do not change this interface drastically. Obviously it can scale for larger or smaller creatures.
3) Notice the number and design of folds in the model. Please keep the number of folds to a minimum. This will help make assembly easier.
4) It is best if the model contacts the ground in at least two places. Otherwise it will be unstable.
5) Models should be "unfolded" to make sure they can be physically made. If there are overlaps when unfolded, the model is invalid. Also, there should be no "internal" vertices. All vertices in the model should be on an outer edge. (i.e. a non-manifold edge)
6) There should not be any detail smaller than 1mm. That means things like individual fingers should not be visible in the model. Instead, model a fist or approximate all of the fingers together, not indivdually.
7) If additional pieces are necessary, please model their attachment features.
8) Finally, the "paper" will be about .3mm thick in reality however the "paper" in the model is infinitely thin. Please account for the real thickness when pieces interact with each other.

Please provide images for your entries as well as the 3D file in STL format for evaluation. If you provide models before the deadline, I will provide feedback for improvement if necessary.

The five models are:
1) Human Male Fighter - http://butterfrog.deviantart.com/art/Pyotr-Maartis-379426936
2) Dwarf Female Rogue - http://butterfrog.deviantart.com/art/Maudra-429167672
3) Human Female Archer - http://butterfrog.deviantart.com/art/Arcane-Archer-278684196
4) Warforged Juggernaut - http://butterfrog.deviantart.com/art/Guard-Warforged-Juggernaut-124416326
5) Dog or Wolf - http://butterfrog.deviantart.com/art/Bravio-animal-companion-128623861

Good luck!

Almost all of these submissions have faces that are not quite co-planar. This will be a big problem for me because it will result in many more folds than are necessary. It is critical to keep the complexity down on these models. So if your program is unable to force faces to be co-planar, maybe you need a new tool.
Personally, I use Sketchup for these models because it is really easy to keep faces co-planar. Once you have a face with four vertices, you can add and/or drag vertices around and it will keep the vertex on the same plane. To get a face with four vertices, make a triangle and add a vertex at a mid-point of one of the edges. (Do this by drawing a line from a corner to a midpoint.)
Sketchup also has a nice plugin called flattery that I use to unfold the model to make sure it works.
    Best of all, it's free!

Once again I have added another model. This time of an elf archer based on this art. http://www.deviantart.com/art/Azregar-431780705
I wasn't able to easily create the quiver or swords on the back, so I left them off. Notice how the arms and arrow and bow are all connected in a loop with the shoulders, that means the bends need to be in-line with each other. Think of the hole in the loop being filled and then make a bend across the entire piece, then remove the inner portion. Essentially there is just a single bend, it just crosses the model in two places.
Notice the level of detail around the knees and arms. Notice how I made the hood over the head. I made the face width 90% of the normal human because this is an elf.
This would be a 5-star model.

I added another model, this time of a kobold. Based on this concept art. http://butterfrog.deviantart.com/art/Fiendish-Lizardkin-303001376

Since this model doesn't have a cape, I made a breastplate and folded it around the front. I then attached the tail through a hole in the torso, to the breastplate. The tail can be threaded through the hole before the shoulders are attached to the neck. This is also a very small model, you can see the comparison to the model 1 fighter. When modeling small creatures, you need to be aware of the size of things. Thin pieces need to be 1.5mm or wider or they will be too flimsy. Wider is better.

Keep the models simple. As few folds as possible while keeping the overall shape and feel. Keep faces co-planar if possible to reduce folds. Two folds each per arm (shoulder, elbow) and leg (hip, upper thigh). Capes and flags can have a few more folds to mimic wavy cloth.

*** I have gone ahead and modeled up the Human Male Fighter to show what I'm looking for. This model would get 5 stars. No internal vertices, three pieces (the hood is a separate piece, but attaches simply with two tabs in two slots in the cape). The head is essentially the head from the fighter_example model with minor changes for the hairstyle of the concept art. I've added small details like the cuff of the boots and the crossbow sticking out of the back. Also notice the face for the crossbow bolts on the left hip. See how simple it is modeled? The texture will show the details of the bolts. The cape and flag have waves in them, but no internal vertices.

So this is a great example of what I want. It didn't take me too long to model, about an hour. Please use this as a guide for the rest of the models.

The images and model file have been added to the brief. ***

    I have many questions:

each part of the model Should form a square When unfolded as a origami peaper? , or May be trimmed to papael Similar to a head or torso shape ( planar shape ) and bend it a little to Have the Desired shape ?

all parties must be united to be unwrapped ( full body with weapons ? ) or can I do each part separately , example : separate head , separate torso , separate left arm , separate right arm , left leg separately , right leg separately . ?

    example: http://i1.ytimg.com/vi/3XcS4PN1cRU/maxresdefault.jpg

weapons are also attached to the body ? weapons or if they should be separated ?

the model should be unwrapped as a six-sided cube made of cut paper ?

The pieces can be any shape, this isn't origami. They can be any shape you want as long as the 3D shape doesn't overlap itself when flattened. That's impossible.
The head, torso, and legs are all one piece. The shoulders, arms, cape, and weapons/shields are also all one piece. Please take a look at the example models provided in the Brief. I want something almost exactly like that.
As far as the cube goes, yes, I will be flattening the model like in that picture. That is how the paper will be cut to make these models. Then the pieces will be folded up and combined to get the good looking 3D model.

      Hope this answers your questions.

I added a detail about no "internal" vertices in the model. All vertices should be on an outer (non-manifold) edge.

The paper can be bent, but every bend needs to pass all the way through the paper from edge to edge. Thus no interior vertices are needed. So the paper cannot make a rounded shape without slits.

Let's consider a cone shape. You cannot make a cone from paper without have a seam that needs to be taped or glued together. But if you needed a cone shape and were okay with the seam being a physical, visible gap/slit in the final model, that could work. In that case, the vertex at the point of the cone would actually still be on an edge because it would be on the slit. So if you want to use that approach, go ahead. Just be sure to leave a small, visible gap/slit in the model showing where the unattached seam is located.

I look forward to seeing your submissions!

One more note. Please don't use the visible slit too much or the model will get weak and flimsy. Visible slits are okay in "non-structural" areas.

Information regarding how I will rate model submissions:
Any model that cannot be created from paper in real life will get a maximum rating of 3 stars.
In order to get four stars, the model must be able to be made from real paper. That means it can be flattened and all connected edges remain connected and there are no overlaps.
To get five stars, the model must contain the (large enough) details from the concept drawing. Boot/glove cuffs, cloak hoods, weapons strung across the back, items on the belt (that stick out to the side), etc.

"Bonus points" will be awarded for creative solutions to tricky problems. (ex. how to depict a quiver full of arrows?)

Finally, it would be helpful if you could color each piece of the model a unique color. For example, in the fighter model, the torso, legs, head would be one color, and the shoulders, arms, axe, and shield would be a different color. Additional pieces, if any, would be different colors too.
