Résumé du concours

Artwork contest (update May 1)

Create an original artwork illustration in the style of Clint Eastwood, the gun toting cowboy from the movie "The Outlaw Josey Wales." Your entry (hereafter just "artwork" for simplicity) in the western pop art style or similar art style suitable for printing and as a company logo. The artwork will be used as a logo for the brand Gunslinger, but the required higher quality level of art and creativity makes this contest more than just a logo design project. There are two pdf files you will need to review. In the file "contest," you will find a still picture from the movie and two illustrations as examples of art we like. In the file "like2", we asked the judges to identify art and graphic design that they liked and felt might apply to this contest. This file is provided to give insight into the minds of the judges only. As the artwork will serve as a logo, it must include the word "Gunslinger."

Directions

Pick a still or frame of actor Clint Eastwood from the movie The Outlaw Josey Wales. The selected still must include Clint holding pistols. Review the file "contest" for two examples of work that we really like.

Artwork must be original. Style may be western pop art, modern art, illustration, Sin City or Punisher comic book style, etc. The character you create does NOT have to photo realistically resemble Clint Eastwood. He should be easily identifiable as a powerful, foreboding figure from the 1800s, western movie cowboy character and he must be holding guns. The artwork will be reproduced on a bottle and as a logo. Every submission must have a 2 color version. Colors should be limited to no more than 5. For example, if your artwork has 4 colors, submit a 4 color version and a 2 color version. The artwork will be approximately 3 inches by 3 inches or smaller and will be part of a label 3 inches wide by 7 inches high. Small detail does not reproduce well on a label, so consider this as well. Fine lines do not reproduce well on a label, so consider this too.

Gunslinger text. The artwork is to include the word "Gunslinger." The text may be completely separate spatially from the artwork or may be incorporated (where the text is part of the artwork and/or superimposed over part of the artwork and/or integral to the artwork) into the artwork. Note that if the text is incorporated into the artwork, you should submit two versions for judging. One version should include your artwork without text. The second version should include the text. The text should be appropriate with the theme of the artwork.

Winning Entry
The artwork must be original. The winner will get the full prize and will in turn provide full and unlimited commercial use of artwork with no restrictions. If entry submitted contains a watermark or is not high quality, a high quality version must be provided prior to contest award. For the selected winning entry, additional design revisions may be required prior to payout of contest award.

Questions
Q: Can I use the still included in the "contest" file?
A: Yes. This is our favorite still from the movie.

Q: Do I need to include the still from the movie?
A: No.

Q: I can't find the movie. What should I do?
A: Type "The Outlaw Josey Wales" into Google and do an image search.

Q: I have a great idea for a character pose but it's not in the movie. Can I use it?
A: Yes. The movie and examples are provided to give details about what we want and inspiration for you. If you have a great idea in the style of the movie, character, movie star, or the contest's sample or style artwork, but it's not from the movie, that's ok. Feel free to use it.

Q: What does the bottle look like?
A: See project file "bottle".

Q: I have a question that's not answered. What should I do?
A: Send us your question. This contest will be updated with additional questions, so check back often. New questions may give you additional info and insights that could help you win the contest.

In answer to several artist's questions, here it is: I really want an original, cool interpretation of the version of the clint eastwood in black and brown with the sun as shown in the file "contest.pdf". But I don't want just a copy, like in entry #44 , which looks almost identical to the original. I want to see the artist's "hand" and interpretation of the bad ass cowboy. And it shouldn't resemble clint eastwood exactly, it's the artist's original character.
That's the entire contest and my personal opinions boiled down. Good luck!

Comments on #29 - great start. Would like to see more of the artist's hand in the face. We like the style of the guns and hands. The face should be in the same style of illustration as the hands.

#33 , i have changed the face and made the gun pointing, clearer as per your suggestion. However, i do not understand the foll: most contestants are sticking to 3"x3" square yet you have awarded 5 stars to an image which is definitely more like 3'x7" and does not have sharp details of the face or gun on which you are insisting. i am not finding fault but a level playground would help us deliver what you want, provided the brief is adhered to. Please also do not reject any entries as contestants lose poits. Thanks

Hello, please tell me, is it possible to divide the word "Gunslinger", something seems - GAN-SLINGER or GANS-LINGER? And if possible, can I put the top part of the word, and part of the word below the picture? Or it is better not break a word? Thank you.

Would have to see it before we could make a decision. If the word was split, it should be in close proximity. Gun on the top of picture and slinger on the bottom of the picture would not be ok.

Comments on #30 . We like the way you are going with your entries. We would like to see the two guns more distinctly. We would also like to see less of Clint's likeness in the face. Remember, we don't want a photo likeness of Clint Eastwood. We want to see more of artist's "hand" in the work. Show us your illustration talents to win the prize!

Why only images from he Outlaw Josey Wales. Eastwood made lots of Western films brandishing pistols, often working outside the law. Why not those?

You can use any western film or image you like. Please don't limit your inspiration to just Josey Wales. Any gunslinger outlaw western character from the 1800s brandishing two pistols is great. As your artwork needs to be original, you can even imagine the perfect character.

Comments for #26 - like the style of the art. Unclear what is in the top left corner, this distracts from the art. The left gun should be clearer and more in the style of the right gun.

I am still waiting for your clarification. Moreover the #20 is definitely bigger than 3"x3", if you go by the illustration and the size of a bottle. Please this is not a complaint, but a query for clarification. I would like to draw an illustration which does not copy clint or other pictures but is a pure label design. Is it valid

Yes, your original artwork does not need to have a likeness of Clint. We will highly favor original illustrations. A photo manipulation of film stills is less preferred. The character that you create should be in the style of a cowboy, outlaw, gunslinger, etc but does not need to be Clint.

Entry #23 - while we want all contestants to review Clint Eastwood's film for inspiration, an entry should be an original artwork. this entry appears too much to be a photoshop filter effect of a still frame from the film. this could be a great starting point, but there should be some of the artist's "hand" evident in the work too. consider, adding more detail or cleaning up the face, making the gun more evident, getting rid of the whip, adding more detail to the torso..., etc.

xenogod- we like the character that you have created. we are divided on whether it reads as a little too sketchy. also not sure about the tip of the gun behind his back and above his shoulder. might be cleaner without.
